Wideband Code Division Multiple Access(WCDMA) system has been developed to overcome the limitations of services available in existing CDMA and GSM system. WCDMA system is a 3G system that provides more value than the existing 2G or 2.5G systems by providing features such as multimedia transmission, high- resolution video service, and fast data transmission.
WCDMA system is classified as 3G system with CDMA2000. However, it is very likely that GSM providers will switch over to the WCDMA system. Therefore it is expected that WCDMA will expand rapidly worldwide.
WCDMA system consists of MS, Node-B, RNC, MSC/VLR, HLR, AuC, GGSN, and SGSN. MS enables the subscriber to access the mobile network and establish calls. Node-B is wirelessly connected to the MS and controls the MS. RNC controls multiple node-B and interworks with MSC/VLR and SGSN which are core equipment. MSC/VLR, HLR, and AuC are core nodes that support registration of subscriber locations, authentication, and supplementary services.
