IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is part of the core network infrastructure that provides various multimedia services based on IP. IMS is open architecture independent of the access network, and can be extended not only to the mobile access network (WCDMA, 1xEVDO, WiFi, WiMAX) but also to the fixed access network (xDSL, Cable) supporting the convergence of fixed and mobile networks.
Due to limited services in the legacy network and growing demand for various services, the network is rapidly evolving into IP network and various services are being introduced. In particular, VoIP service quickly changes the market share of the mobile operator and gives mobility even to fixed operators blurring the boundary between the fixed and mobile operators.
As a result, users will prefer an operator that provides various services at a reasonable cost, and the answer to effectively respond to this change is IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS.)
