WCDMA Equipment Identity Register (WCDMA EIR) stores and manages the International Mobile Station Equipment Identity (IMEI) in the WCDMA network. Mobile Switching Center (MSC) or the Serving GPRS Supporting Node (SGSN) transmits the IMEI confirmation messages to EIR through Mobile Application Part (MAP.) EIR sends the IMEI query to the database, and forwards the query result to the MSC that originally sent the request or the SGSN. When MSC or SGSN receives the normal status (white list), MSC or SGSN will keep processing the call. Otherwise (when receiving black list for stolen handsets), MSC and SGSN will stop processing the call. EIR is used to prevent and detect stolen or illegal handsets.
